AMC640XA Elevated Temperature Tensile Properties

AMC640XA Elevated Temperature Strength

Influence of Heat Treatment on Tensile Strength

AMC640xa

Material Grade:

AMC640xa

Material Type:

Metal Matrix Composite - Silicon Carbide Particle Reinforced Aluminium Alloy

Description:

AMC640xa is an aluminium alloy (AA6061) reinforced with a high percentage (40% by volume) of ultrafine particles of silicon carbide.  It is manufactured by a powder metallurgy route using high energy mixing to ensure excellent particle distribution and to enhance its mechanical properties.

This material offers an extremely high tensile modulus (nearly double that of the parent alloy), good static and fatigue strengths well in excess of high performance aluminium alloys, whilst retaining reasonable ductility. The MMC may be forged, extruded or machined to shape. The material also demonstrates superior elevated temperature strength and thermal stability in comparison with conventional 6xxx aluminium alloys.

AMC640xa has achieved Class 1 status with respect to stress corrosion cracking resistance at an applied stress of 370 MPa, according to ESA Standard ECSS-Q-70-37A.
